Kettle ponds, camping, hiking and biking draw nature lovers to this Cape Cod park.

On a recent camping trip to Nickerson State Park, one of the highlights for my daughter and a few of her friends was the easy access to swimming in one of the eight ponds located in the 1,900-acre state park. A three-minute walk from the campsite (one of more than 400 located here) and everyone was taking a dip in no time.

Though Nickerson State Park is located in the heart of Cape Cod in Brewster, the scenery is not that of the beach. Instead of surf and sand, you’re surrounded by pine and oak tree forests. The eight fresh water ponds, actually “kettle ponds” formed thousands of years ago, depend on groundwater and precipitation, not rivers or streams. If you don’t feel like setting up your own tent, you can always stay in a yurt (but you’ll need to book way in advance).

Whether you decide to stay overnight or just visit for the day, there is plenty to do. You can swim and canoe at Flax Pond or birdwatch or catch-and-release fish at Higgins Pond. There is a paved eight-mile bike path that meets up with the popular 22-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail. (You can rent bikes close to the main entrance of the park.) There’s a playground and plenty of places to picnic.

Several hiking trails, from short easy hikes to longer treks, offer a variety of scenery. It’s also easy to get to the Cape Cod Bay on foot. Park staff often offer seasonal interpretive and recreational programs ranging from hikes to explaining local wildlife.

Plan B:

The excellent Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary offers great wildlife exhibits and Oceanside trails to explore.
